Local Organization Marks Fifteen Years of Helping Up-and-Coming Latino Artists

AUSTIN, TX – The Serie Project, an Austin-based non-profit organization that offers residencies to Latino artists, will celebrate its fifteenth anniversary with a series of free local events from November 20 to 22. Since its foundation in 1993, the Serie Project has sponsored more than 250 artists, many of whom have continued their success after leaving the project.

The Serie Project offers rising and established artists a one-week residency to help them develop their craft and make a living from their work.

Sam Coronado, founder and Director of the Serie Project, believes that the work the organization does is indispensable to maintaining Latino and Hispanic art in Texas and across the nation. “It’s hard for young artists to see that they can make a living with their work,” says Coronado “but we give them the lessons and tools they need to make it less of an uphill battle; to keep them producing good works.”

The celebration will coincide with the annual conference for the Consejo Gráfico, a national network of organizations that advance Latino printmaking in the United States. The Consejo Gráfico has chosen member Serie Project to host its conference this year.

On Thursday, November 20, Serie Project and Consejo Gráfico artists will be at the Blanton Museum of Art to view the New York Graphic Workshop exhibit.

On Friday, November 21, the Serie Project will hold a panel symposium titled U.S. Latino Printmaking in the 21st Century at the Texas Union Santa Rita Room of the University of Texas. The panels will feature artists, art administrators, curators, historians, and members of the Consejo Gráfico. The symposium will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

On the evening of the 21, Sam Coronado will speak at a reception at the Mexican American Cultural Center. The reception, scheduled for 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., will also include book signings and a printing demonstration. Food and beverages will be served.

Festivities will close on the 22 with an exhibit opening and silent auction of select Consejo Gráfico and Serie Project works at Mexic-Arte Museum. The Serie Project will premiere its 15th production season at the opening.

Admission is free for all events.

For more information about the Serie Project, the Consejo Gráfico, or the upcoming celebration, contact Michael Rowland of the Serie Project at 512-385-3591.
